How to use the VAT Calculator

  1. 01
Choose add or remove VAT. "Add" works from a net price; "Remove" extracts VAT from a gross price.
  2. 02
Enter the amount. Net (before VAT) or gross (including VAT) depending on the mode.
  3. 03
Set the VAT rate. e.g. 20% in the UK, 19% in Germany.

How is it calculated?

Adding VAT multiplies the net price by (1 + rate/100) to get the gross. Removing VAT divides the gross by (1 + rate/100) to recover the net, and the VAT itself is the difference between the two. £100 + 20% VAT = £120 gross (£20 VAT).
