How to use the BMI Calculator

  1. 01
Choose your units. Metric (kg, cm) or imperial (lb, ft/in).
  2. 02
Enter weight and height. The fields switch to match your unit choice.
  3. 03
Read your BMI. Your BMI, weight category, and the healthy range for your height.

How is it calculated?

Body Mass Index is weight divided by height squared — kg ÷ m² in metric, or 703 × lb ÷ in² in imperial. The standard adult categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30+ obese. The tool also shows the weight range that would put you in the healthy band for your height.

Frequently asked

The questions readers ask most about the bmi calculator.

It's a useful population screen but doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. Very muscular people can read "overweight" while being healthy; it's also less reliable for the elderly and shouldn't be used for children with adult categories.
